Art in Roanoke at Elmwood Park - The Natural City is a temporary sculpture exhibition in Roanoke’s Elmwood Park Art Walk. Ten sculptures are being displayed for 18 months along the axis adjacent to the Roanoke Public Library and stretching from the South Jefferson Street Entrance of the recently renovated park and concert venue. Artists were selected in a competitive process including both existing pieces and site specific work created just for this location and exhibition. Artists are from around the country and around our region. The route begins at Patrick Henry High School’s artistic bus shelter, continues through the Grandin Village neighborhood, then travels along the Roanoke River Greenway towards downtown. Connecting with the Mill Mountain Greenway at Williamson Road, it then follows the greenway into downtown Proper. The bulk of the pieces you’ll explore are in the downtown core. From there, the route leads into a portion of the Old Southwest neighborhood, where it will loop back into the mail route at Wasena Park. A new contemporary art gallery, Alexander/Heath Contemporary, LLC opened in March in the West End of Downtown. The gallery is located at 425 Campbell Avenue at the corner of Fifth Street and is part of the “Flats on Fifth” complex. The gallery focuses on solo exhibitions initially, running for five to six weeks. They plan to mix in community minded events such as an “Appalachian Thru-Hiker Convo” in early June.
