‘Aurora Artisans’ is an art gallery/studios of regional artists working in various media including painting, printmaking, photography, fiber arts, pottery and jewelry. Custom framing is provided by ‘The Framer’s Workshop’. On May 1, 1980, a group of women who had worked together in various arts organizations, decided to form an organization of their own. They named the organization "The Athenian Society for the Arts & Sciences," for the city of Athens, the cultural capital of the classical world. The object of the organization is to further the arts and sciences in the community by cultivating opportunities for enrichment and education, and by nurturing cooperation with, and lending assistance to, organizations dedicated to the arts and sciences. The well-organized day trips have enlightened many long-time area residents as well as those members who have recently moved to the Roanoke Valley. Art Visions Gallery and Studio was formed by a group of 13 artists to share artistic ideas and visions and to be active participants in the local art community. The Gallery provides a unique venue for these 12 artists to show and sell their work, as well as provide a place for the artists to paint and to conduct classes. Art in Roanoke at Elmwood Park - The Natural City is a temporary sculpture exhibition in Roanoke’s Elmwood Park Art Walk. Ten sculptures are being displayed for 18 months along the axis adjacent to the Roanoke Public Library and stretching from the South Jefferson Street Entrance of the recently renovated park and concert venue. Artists were selected in a competitive process including both existing pieces and site specific work created just for this location and exhibition. Artists are from around the country and around our region. On the first Friday of each month Downtown Roanoke Art Galleries are open late! ART BY NIGHT showcases Roanoke’s thriving arts community, featuring diverse galleries, museums and artist’s studios. This event supports Roanoke’s talented, local artists, and brings the community together through art openings, live music and demonstrations. The route begins at Patrick Henry High School’s artistic bus shelter, continues through the Grandin Village neighborhood, then travels along the Roanoke River Greenway towards downtown. Connecting with the Mill Mountain Greenway at Williamson Road, it then follows the greenway into downtown Proper. The bulk of the pieces you’ll explore are in the downtown core. From there, the route leads into a portion of the Old Southwest neighborhood, where it will loop back into the mail route at Wasena Park. The directions assume you are traveling to and from Patrick Henry High school, though you may start the route at whatever point you choose. A new contemporary art gallery, Alexander/Heath Contemporary, LLC opened in March in the West End of Downtown. The gallery is located at 425 Campbell Avenue at the corner of Fifth Street and is part of the “Flats on Fifth” complex. The gallery focuses on solo exhibitions initially, running for five to six weeks. They plan to mix in community minded events such as an “Appalachian Thru-Hiker Convo” in early June.
