Free to the public, visitors watch the artists at work and see how projects are developed through live demonstrations and open studio viewing. Established as a non-profit organization, we are dedicated to the prosperity, quality, and sustainability of regional art. Artists and arts organizations have opportunities to create, interpret, present, and perform artistic work. Artists will be provided with access to studio space, equipment, technical support, and professional development opportunities. Our program addresses the need for a bridge between museums and schools in teaching students of all ages self-esteem, and visual expression. Under the direction of Kimberly R. Davidson, the Roanoke College Children's Choir was started in 1987. The current choir is made up of more than 270 children, divided into three training choirs and a concert choir. Choir members, ranging in age from 8 to 18, are chosen through auditions in May of each year, and are from throughout the Roanoke Valley and surrounding communities. Choir members receive a musical experience designed to develop and encourage personal and musical growth. This challenging program of voice and choral repertoire demands dedication and discipline from its young members. The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1953, is the largest professional orchestra in western Virginia. Under the leadership of David Stewart Wiley, Musical Director and Conductor, the RSO offers a subscription season of 11 concerts including 5 Classics, 3 Virtuosi (chamber orchestra) and 3 Pops concerts. A number of these concerts feature the Roanoke Symphony Chorus with the Orchestra. Two Holiday Pops performances and special presentations by the Tallis Scholars and Leon Bates in December round out the season`s offerings. The Roanoke Symphony also plays a series of "run-out" performances throughout the region. The RSO`s education program includes concerts for elementary and middle school students.
