Located in downtown Roanoke’s century-old freight station, the museum includes an extensive collection of steam, diesel, and electric locomotives and other types of rail cars. The pride of the Rail Yard are two of the most advanced steam locomotives ever built, the Norfolk & Western Class J 611 and Class A 1218. The current choir is made up of more than 270 children, divided into three training choirs and a concert choir. The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1953, is the largest professional orchestra in western Virginia. Under the leadership of David Stewart Wiley, Musical Director and Conductor, the RSO offers a subscription season of 11 concerts including 5 Classics, 3 Virtuosi (chamber orchestra) and 3 Pops concerts. A number of these concerts feature the Roanoke Symphony Chorus with the Orchestra. Two Holiday Pops performances and special presentations by the Tallis Scholars and Leon Bates in December round out the season`s offerings.
