Play Roanoke

When it comes to outdoor education, there are many pathways to follow when taking part in an activity lead by the outdoors team at Roanoke Parks and Recreation. If adventure is on your mind, our outdoor adventure department can lead you in the right direction. More than just a hike in the woods, this department is led by a core of well-experienced staff members who have spent countless hours recreating in Roanoke’s scenic wilderness and waterway playgrounds. Dare to explore murder hole, one of Virginia’s most historic caves, or stop by the local pool, and learn to roll a whitewater kayak in preparation for a guided river trip. And we don’t stop when the snow falls! Join us for a dog sled or cross country ski adventure at one of our nearby winter resorts. All of these challenging and educational opportunities can be found in our quarterly issue of PLAY Magazine, and we think you’ll be pleasantly pleased that the price won’t knock your hiking socks off either. Come experience the nature of Roanoke in the East’s best mid-sized mountain town! Outdoor Rock Climbing: Join us for a trip to the vertical world as we explore the sharp end! Whether its bouldering at Mcafee Knob or roping up at Goshen or the New River Gorge, we have climbing trips to excite the inner child in all of us! Guided Hikes: The Roanoke Region offers and array of hiking opportunities that we love to share. Our expert staff are ready to take you on a guided social hike of your choosing. Fee will include transportation to and from Hike as well as guiding services. Wild Caving: Caving is a unique program Roanoke Parks and Recreation offers that takes participants into wild caves, anytime of the year. Join us on one of our caving adventures and explore the natural wonders of our local caves. Sea Kayak/Canoe Adventures: Learn about Paddling in our Kayaking, Canoeing, and Stand Up Paddle Boarding; beginner, intermediate and advanced programs
