The Historical Society of Western Virginia has offices in quarters shared by the History Museum and the O. Winston Link Museum and the Raymond Loewy Gallery. History Museum exhibits trace the growth of the Roanoke Valley and beyond, offering a glimpse of how life was lived in southwestern Virginia through photographs and artifacts. Rotating exhibit information can be obtained at the website as can a schedule of upcoming talks and tours. Admission prices offer entrance to both the History and O. Winston Link Museums. Founded in 1957, the organization seeks to preserve, interpret and promote the heritage of the western region of the Commonwealth, operating the combined History Museum of Western Virginia and the O. Winston Link Museum along with the Raymond Loewy Gallery devoted to advertising designed by the man who also redesigned the museums headquarters that once served as a train passenger station. The Society also conducts seasonal educational tours of the Crystal Spring Steam Pump Station located at the foot of Mill Mountain in Roanoke. The Crystal Spring Filtration Facility and Pump Station offers a look at Roanokes oldest drinking water source.
